“The Latvian fairy tales and legends” – three legends volume Latvian and German text Publication in the Internet

There is a complete German translation (excluding the introduction of volume 1) of the largest publications of Latvian fairytales and legends (“Latviešu pasakas un teikas” 1925 – 1937, 15 volumes, 7630 pages, 7895 texts) that corresponds to 10 000 pages at the archives of the Research Centre of the Göttingen Academy of Science “Enzyklopädie des Märchens” and is the largest translation of Latvian folklore in any other language (the text is typewritten in one copy). The translation was done between the late sixties and the early seventies of the 20th century.

As a result of the project there will be three volumes of Latvian legends published online in a user friendly and at the same time suitable for the research of folklore in German and Latvian in a free access body of parallel text at the end of 2012. A detailed search system, as well as a concordance tool will be developed, that will permit the viewing and the analysis of any specific word or verbiage in a demonstrative way according to the usage context, opening up the opportunities to use the body for the research of language. The subsequent objective of work is to publish the texts of all 15 volumes in the bilingual parallel body where it will be possible to read and study Latvian fairy-tales and legends in Latvian and German online and for free.
