Achieved aim(s) of the project
At the beginning of the project, TU Berlin‘s Institute of History and Philosophy of Science, Technology, and Literature organized a Sociology of Science Seminar. The project team reached out to German researchers who extensively explored inclusion in the academic communities and various aspects of Lithuanian quantitative (metrics-based) research assessment. After this discussion, the German-Lithuanian research team organized two virtual events.
Researchers from Germany, Lithuania, and the Netherlands delivered their research insights over the virtual public seminar ‘Inclusion in Local and International Communities’. Jochen Gläser presented about the theoretical foundations of inclusion in academic communities. Susanne Wollin-Giering and Markus Hoffmann overviewed the German academic career system and answered the empirical question of to what extent unemployed researchers are included or excluded from the scientific community in certain disciplines. Eleonora Dagienė explained inclusion aspects arising from conversations with Lithuanian academics and politicians. Guus Dix shared the latest observations on incentives of science for the benefit of society, as ‘Impact’ and ‘Inclusion’ are very much related in contemporary academia.
The most influential Lithuanian policymakers discussed the essential matters of research assessment in Lithuania over the virtual public discussion ‘Local and International Circumstances that Influenced the Development of Lithuanian Research Assessment’.
The project’s insights will be accumulated into a presentation at the conference ‘REvaluation’21’, a paper in the fteval Journal for Research and Technology Policy Evaluation, and future publications.
Main activities and venues
1) The public seminar ‘Inclusion in Local and International Academic Communities’ was streamed on 28 October 2021 (recorded in English).
2) The public discussion ‘Local and International Circumstances that Influenced the Development of Lithuanian Research Assessment’ was streamed on 29 October 2021 (recorded in Lithuanian).
The events were advertised broadly, and the conference recordings are available for free to all interested stakeholders.
Direct and indirect target group
Direct:
- Policymakers, research administrators, and researchers of higher education institutions in Lithuania.
- The seminar participants (50 were signed up to watch a live broadcast on one of the channels)
- The discussion participants (60 were signed up to watch a live broadcast on one of the channels)
Indirect:
- Policymakers, research administrators, and researchers of higher education institutions in other countries who are interested in the topics.
- The international academic community working in science and technology evaluation research could benefit from presentations delivered at conferences and publications (e.g., published in fteval and other journals)
