Aim(s) of the project

The Baltic area is a region characterized by a plurality of languages, cultures, societies, religious beliefs and political systems.  While the Baltic Sea separates these linguistic and cultural areas, it also connects them in numerous ways. The conference focuses on the connective power of language and culture (particularly the German language) in this region of exchange. Within this general framework, the conference addresses three thematic areas:

  1. Linguistic and cultural regions bordering on the Baltic Sea and time periods in which German (and other languages) played a prominent role;
  2. Individuals and groups who learned German (and its varieties) as a foreign or second language in order to foster social, economic, cultural or religious contacts;
Traces of the long-standing linguistic and cultural exchange in everyday life and in historic artefacts.   

Target group


Direct: ca. 22 participants who gave scholarly papers

Indirect: general audience (ca. 20 persons) – interested persons from Latvian and German cultural societies in Latvia, from different cultural institutions in Baltic countries as well as teachers of German and History et al.

Public events in the frame of the project

Public events of the project took place on September 20-22. 2018. The opening and closing addresses were scheduled as public events in the Assembly Hall (Mazā Aula) of University of Latvia.
