February 24, 12.00, University of Latvia, Faculty of Humanities, Visvalža iela 4a, Riga

The lecture was held in German with consecutive interpreting into Latvian.

The language of social media is often considered as a sign of downfall of language and culture – there are concerns that this language exerts a negative influence on the collquial language: „Correct grammar (..) has become a rarity, not to mention the chaotic orthography and spelling. Text messaging per mobile phones and E-Mail exchange have already made an impact: hurried, usually in phonetic used slang eradicates the correct literary language” (Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, 29.11.2003). What do experts say about that? Linguistics and social researches do not affirm this concern. The analysis of this kind of language development shows that under the influence of social media communication certain functional new versions of written language has come into exsistence between the written and oral language. These versions are not only useful for optimization, but they also are competitive with till now as a standard avowed language use. There are appropriate and scientifically grounded criterions needed for the evaluation of these versions. Prof. Dr. Schlobinski will present particular analysis of this language use, considering the comparative aspects of language and culture.
